Maybe you bought land with an old house on it, or a barn on the place is falling in. Demolition takes it down so you can use the ground again. Southern Grind Solutions tears down old houses, mobile homes, barns, sheds and outbuildings around Broxton and Coffee County. We work on rural lots and in town, and we clean the debris up from the site.
If a new house or a mobile home will go on the lot, demolition is step one. The cleared ground then moves into site preparation for the new build. Where no sewer line reaches the lot, we also handle septic tank installation for the new home.
Tell us about the new septic system, the land to clear or the dirt work and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Demolition starts with a look at the building and the ground around it. We note what the building is made of and how a machine will reach it. Then we put the quote in writing.
Before any machine work, the building gets the asbestos inspection the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) calls for. The utility companies shut off service first. Georgia law requires a Georgia 811 locate request before mechanized digging.
After that, we tear the building down with an excavator and clean up what is left. That leaves open ground for whatever comes next. If brush has grown up around the old place, land clearing opens the rest of the lot.
Coffee County's land development code requires a building permit before any building or structure is torn down. Farm accessory buildings are exempt. Ask Coffee County Code Enforcement how that rule fits a barn or shed on your land.
The City of Douglas has its own demolition permit, and every structure needs one. Two buildings on one lot take two permits. In the Gaskin Avenue Historic District, demolition also needs the historic preservation commission's approval.
The Douglas form also puts the Georgia 811 call and the utility shutoffs on the owner. Other towns and counties set their own rules. The county building and zoning office or city hall answers the permit question, and we point you there.
Georgia EPD says yes: demolition projects need an asbestos inspection first. A trained asbestos inspector takes samples and gives you a written report with the lab results. EPD advises asking an inspector for proof of current training. The report tells you and your demolition contractor where the asbestos is.
EPD's list of asbestos materials includes vinyl floor tile, cement siding, pipe insulation and textured ceilings. Products with asbestos are still legal to make, so the rules apply to buildings of any age.
Asbestos that crumbles by hand, or could crumble during the work, has to come out before demolition. Georgia EPD licenses the companies that remove it, and that is a separate trade. EPD also says the inspector should stay separate from the removal company, to avoid a conflict of interest. Once the removal is done, the building can come down.

We come out to see the lot and what the job takes. On a septic job, that includes where the well and the drain field will sit.
You get the quote in writing. Once you say yes, we set a start date.
Georgia law requires a Georgia 811 locate request before mechanized digging, so buried lines get marked first. Then the clearing, the septic dig, the dirt work or the teardown begins.
On a septic job, Georgia's rules keep the system uncovered until the county's final inspection and written approval. Then we backfill and rough grade, and every job ends with the site cleaned up.

We cut grown-up pastures and lots back down with a brush cutter. Overgrown fence lines get cut back too, and the cut grass stays where it falls.
